Calculating Instructional Units

When scheduling your subjects, focus on instructional units. If a subject is offered for a full fall or spring term, the instructional units equals the number of hours per week published in an "x-x-x" format:

  • first x: number of hours spent in class each week
  • second x: number of hours spent in lab/recitation each week
  • third x: number of hours of outside time expected students will spend each week

IAP and summer units require a slightly more complex calculation. Use this chart to help you determine the number of scheduled hours for full-term, partial-term, and IAP subjects.
